History of Bible Printing at Cambridge
The first Bible printed in Cambridge was
an edition of the Geneva Bible, in 1591. This was the Bible of
Shakespeare and was carried to the New World by the Pilgrim Fathers.
In 1629, the first Cambridge edition of the King James Version
was published.
This was significantly more accurate than earlier
printings produced in London, and from this time onward Cambridge
established a reputation of care for the text and for printing
quality. Today, that reputation is confirmed by Cambridge’s
position as The Queen’s Printer, with special responsibilities
concerning the administration of the Crown rights in the King James
Version of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer.
